| Q What is the difference between MBA and PGDM. Why do some institutes like IIM’s, XLRI, XIMB & CSREM mention PGDM equivalent to MBA? |
In India PGDM and MBA are the same or are synonymous. Public & Private autonomous institutes like IIM’s, XLRI, IIFT, XIMB, CSREM, etc offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Management, whereas all the management schools which are affiliated to Universities in India offer Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degrees. Both of them are fully recognized by the recruiters and corporate in India and abroad. |
| Q I am doing my +3 final year in Commerce. Do I qualify for admission into a Management Institute? Can I get direct admission on the basis of my marks? |
The Minimum qualification to get admission into a management school is a graduation degree in any field. Those students who are scheduled to appear for their final year exam also qualify to get admission to management schools. Direct admission is not possible on the basis of Marks. In Orissa most management schools require you to appear in either of the following entrance examinations like Common Admission Test (Popularly known as CAT), Xavier Admission Test (XAT), MAT, Orissa JEE, IRMA. You have to take any one of the following exams. Once you appear the exam your score in terms of percentile or %age is sent to you. Next you will have to buy the admission forms of different management schools (Cost ranges from Rs.500 to Rs.1500) and after duly filling up the form with your academic achievements you should apply to the management schools. On the basis of your score in the entrance exams and your career you shall receive a call from the different institutes which would typically conduct a group discussion and Personal interview before announcing the names of the successful candidates. |
| Q I heard that CSREM is an EDI, what does EDI mean and how will it help a student of CSREM once he passes out? |
Yes CSREM is an Entrepreneurship Development Institute which was established in 2006 with a 3 way partnership between the Department of MSME, Govt. of India, Department of Industries, Govt. of Orissa and the CSREM trust. It is the only EDI of its kind in the whole of eastern India. Passing out from an EDI has several benefits, the biggest being getting easy loans from banks and financial institutions in setting up one’s own company. Also CSREM offers arguably the best training for any potential students on management. Its dedicated faculty have all along exposed students to the application of the management concepts in life with field visits, industrial visits, field work, assignments, field projects, etc. The invigorating course structure helps students to achieve their full potential within a short span of time. Other evaluation symbols used at the Institute are: I = Incomplete course work; and P = Pass for a non-credit course. Minimum Performance standards are specified in the Manual of Policies to qualify a student for promotion to next year and award of the diploma. |
| Q Dear Sir, What is this new domain specialization being offered by CSREM? |
Typically Management Schools offer specializations in areas like Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Information Systems, Rural Management, Retail Management, etc. But since 2000 A.D., corporate firms are not satisfied by the knowledge level of candidates. This has led to a demand for Management students who are experts in particular fields. CSREM has taken the lead in providing expert training to the students and thereby producing specialists in particular fields. Presently Domain Specializations are being offered in FINANCIAL SERVICES, BUSINESS ANALYTICS, ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING (with SAP) & RURAL MANAGEMENT. |
| Q What does a student learn in these domains and how is it different from typical Marketing, Finance, HR specializations? |
Under Domain Specialization a student is exposed to practical aspects of his domain of work. The training will be in all the papers under the domain the student is specializing. A student under this new system has to spend less time in the class room and more with a corporate firm. A student will spend the last 2 terms namely the 5th & 6th Terms (a total of 6 months) with a company which has tied up with CSREM. This is over and above the 2 months you spend for summer internship. The time the students spends with a corporate firm will allow him to work in the area of his or her choice and at the same time will enable the company to map the students skills, strengths and weaknesses. This interaction for 2 terms will considerably improve the employment prospects of the students. Under a typical management specialization a student does not have this luxury of working in an organization for 6 months apart from the summer internship. It is becoming difficult for companies to pick up good students through the regular placement route. What is taught under each of the domains and how is it relevant for job placements? Financial Services Domain In this domain a student is taught subjects like Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Financial Markets, Marketing of Financial Services, Working Capital Management, etc. This teaching will ensure that the student has updated knowledge on the current financial issues, terminology, different financial instruments in vogue, etc. 30% time will be spent in the classroom and 70% in the field gaining practical hands-on experience. Employment prospects are booming in this sector with financial companies, large banks, Insurance firms Business Analytics This is a domain which is growing very fast with the influx of MNC’s trying to gain competitive advantage by operating out of India. This domain has papers like Data Mining, Predictive Analysis, and Business Intelligence. Business Analytics focuses on developing new insights and understanding of business performance based on data and statistical methods. Business analytics makes extensive use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling, and fact-based management to drive decision making.The course has been structured in such a way that a student will be exposed to the best practices in the industry. The following are some of the areas covered by the business analytics domain • Data Mining • Analytics • Business Intelligence • Test and Learn • Business Process Discovery • Online analytical processing OLAP • Statistics The employment prospects for Business Analysts is tremendous in India and globally as the growth rate in demand for analysts is increasing at the rate of 30% each year March issue of Business India. Employment opportunities in Large Banks, Consulting Firms, Large MNC’s, and Navratna PSU’s exist in huge numbers. The institutes offering this domain are very few and are unable to cater to market demand. Enterprise Resources Planning (With SAP in partnership with University Alliance Programme) Enterprise Resource Planning is one of the hottest IT courses in demand in India and globally today. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is an integrated computer-based system used to manage internal and external resources including tangible assets, financial resources, materials, and human resources. It is a software architecture whose purpose is to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders. Built on a centralized database and normally utilizing a common computing platform, ERP systems consolidate all business operations into a uniform and enterprise wide system environment. The demand for ERP professionals is enormous in India and globally but a word of caution THIS DEMAND IN INDIA AND GLOBALLY IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS WHO AUTHENTIC SAP CERTIFICATION.
